Biography - Jean Elizabeth Tait, DKATI

Jean has:

  • Worked in a federal corrections institution with female offenders in a variety of security environments, administering residential, group, and individual art therapy sessions. In this setting, issues such as depression, self-harm, addictions, FASD, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and body image were addressed.

  • Developed Creating Hope Through Art, a suicide prevention adjunct program for adults and seniors.

  • Founded a Community Art Studio in a large downtown cathedral, geared to working with adult men and women from all walks of life, including those residing in shelters.

  • Developed Art & Self Discovery, a group that meets for six weeks, for the purpose of assisting women to acquire personal insight through art and the creative process.

  • Worked in an Edmonton social services agency with children and adolescents who were dealing with behavioral, developmental, and mental health challenges.

  • Created Visionary Soul Journey, Jean’s workshop developed around the use of the drum and art-making, delivered in a variety of locations in Western Canada.

Jean has exhibited her paintings as a First Nations artist since 1992 in Canada and abroad. Her own experiences of self-exploration through art-making and those who shared their experiences while viewing her artwork in exhibitions led to an interest in the relationship between art and healing.

Jean obtained her diploma in Art Therapy from the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute in Nelson, B.C., Canada.
